Reel Afrika is a streaming service for short-form African drama. Every series is shot vertically and cut into one-to-three minute episodes, released daily. It is designed for how people on the continent actually watch — on a phone, on mobile data, in the gaps between other things.

The format is not a compromise. Episodes are written to a shape: a turn every ninety seconds, a reason to tap next at the end of each one. That is a different craft from cutting a feature into pieces.

Short-form vertical drama is one of the fastest-growing formats in entertainment, and almost none of it is African. The stories that travel here — inheritance and family secrets, village and city, love that crosses class lines — have an audience that is currently being served dubbed imports. We would rather make the original.
